Code of conduct

Effective October 3, 2026

Genesee is a small town where people know their neighbors. This site should feel the same way: friendly, useful and respectful. These guidelines apply to everything shared here, including events, listings, photos, captions, messages and, when it opens, the marketplace.

Be a good neighbor

  • Be respectful, even when you disagree.
  • Share accurate information, and correct it when something changes.
  • Respect people’s privacy, especially children’s.
  • Give credit to photographers, organizers and anyone else whose work you share.

Not allowed

  • Harassment and threats: bullying, intimidation, personal attacks or threats of any kind.
  • Hate: content that demeans people for their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability or veteran status.
  • Private information: anyone’s home address, phone number or other personal details shared without their consent, and photos of people in private settings.
  • Photos of people without consent: anyone clearly identifiable must have agreed to be shown, and children need a parent or guardian’s OK.
  • Sexual or graphic content: nudity, sexual material, or graphic violence or injury.
  • Illegal activity: anything that promotes or arranges illegal acts, or the sale of illegal goods or services.
  • Spam and scams: repeated or misleading posts, fake events, bait listings, chain letters, or attempts to collect money or personal information under false pretenses.
  • Impersonation: pretending to be another person, business or organization.
  • Others’ work: photos or text you don’t have the right to share.

Civic and political events

Candidate forums, town meetings, ballot information sessions and similar events are welcome on the calendar, whatever group hosts them. Event descriptions should say what the event is. They aren’t the place for campaign messaging or attacks on opponents.

Reporting a problem

If you see something that breaks these rules, or that you’re in and want removed, use the contact form and include a link to it. I review every report. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.

What I do

I may edit, decline or remove content, and I may stop accepting submissions from anyone who repeatedly or seriously breaks these rules. I report threats of violence and content that exploits children to law enforcement.
