Privacy policy
Effective October 3, 2026
geneseeid.us is run by a Genesee neighbor. I collect as little as I can and never sell it. This policy explains what I collect and how I use it.
What I collect
- What you submit for publication: event details, business listings, photos, captions and photo credits. These are published once approved.
- Your email address on submissions: I ask for it so I can follow up with questions. It is never published.
- Local food stands: your stand’s details, availability updates and photos, which are published once approved, and your email, which I use only to send your private manage link and ask questions. I store only a scrambled form of your manage link, so it can’t be recovered from my records, only replaced.
- Accounts: if you sign in, I keep your email address and a record of your sign-in sessions (including the IP address and browser they came from) so you stay signed in and so I can spot misuse. Sign-in links are single-use and expire after 15 minutes.
- Contact messages: your name, email and message, so I can reply.
- Marketplace sign-ups: your email, whether you want to buy or sell, and any note you add.
- Photo details: I strip location (GPS), camera and other hidden details (EXIF data) from every photo when it’s uploaded. I keep only the image and the information you type in. I also record which version of the photo release you accepted, and when.
- Technical information: like nearly every website, my server sees your IP address and browser type when you visit. I use IP addresses briefly, in memory, to limit spam and repeated sign-in attempts. My server logs may keep them for up to 30 days for security and troubleshooting.
What I don’t do
- No advertising, and no ad or tracking networks.
- No analytics services and no tracking cookies.
- No third-party requests on my pages: fonts and images are served from my own server. Map links open Google Maps only when you click them.
- I never sell, rent or trade your information.
Cookies
I set cookies only when you sign in: a session cookie that keeps you signed in, and, for administrators who choose it, one that remembers a trusted device. Visitors who don’t sign in get no cookies from me. If you change the display settings (light or dark, easier to read), that choice is saved in your own browser and isn’t sent to the site.
How I use information
- To review and publish the events, listings and photos you send.
- To answer your messages and ask about your submissions.
- To tell marketplace sign-ups when the marketplace opens.
- To keep the site secure and free of spam.
Who I share it with
Only the services I need to run the site, such as my web host and email provider, and only so they can provide that service. I will also share information if the law requires it, or if I need to protect someone’s safety.
How long I keep it
- Published events, listings and photos stay until they’re removed or no longer relevant.
- Contact messages are deleted within a year once they’ve been handled.
- Marketplace sign-ups are kept until the marketplace launches and you’ve been notified, or until you ask to be removed.
The email digest
If you sign up for the digest, I keep your email address, how often you want it and which sections you chose, and use them only to send it. Every digest has a link to change your choices or unsubscribe; unsubscribing deletes your address from the list straight away.
Messages sent through the site
Postings can take messages through a form instead of showing the poster’s contact details; that’s the default when you post. A public email or phone number appears only if you choose to enter one. I email your message, name and address to the poster so they can reply, and I don’t keep a copy. The poster’s address isn’t shown to you unless they reply.
Your choices
You can ask me to show you, correct or delete the information I have about you, or to take down something you submitted or something posted about you or your business. Use the “Report a problem” link on that page, or contact me, and I’ll take care of it.
Children
This site isn’t directed at children under 13, and I don’t knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has sent me information, contact me and I’ll delete it.
Security
I use reasonable safeguards, including encrypted connections and limited access, but no website can promise perfect security.
Changes
If I change this policy, I’ll post the update here with a new effective date.
