A Genesee address of your own

[email protected]: an email address that says where you’re from, and stays yours whichever internet provider you use.

Coming soon. This isn’t on sale yet, and the prices below are what I’m planning, not final. Tell me you’re interested and which name you’d like, and I’ll email you when it opens.

Personal mailbox

$36 a year

Your own [email protected] inbox, on the web and on your phone.

  • 5 GB of storage, enough for years of everyday mail
  • Up to 3 extra names (aliases) that land in the same inbox
  • Webmail, plus the mail app on your phone or computer
  • Spam and virus filtering
  • Attachments up to 25 MB
  • Send to up to 200 recipients a day

Family or business

$96 a year

Up to five mailboxes for a household, farm, shop or club.

  • 5 mailboxes with 5 GB each
  • Up to 10 aliases, such as info@ or orders@
  • Business names are verified before they’re issued
  • A shared address that delivers to several people
  • Everything in the personal mailbox
  • Send to up to 500 recipients a day
  • One bill, one person to call

Community group

Free

For Genesee nonprofits, clubs, churches, youth teams and volunteer groups.

  • One shared address, such as boosters@, delivered to up to three people
  • One mailbox with 5 GB of storage
  • The address belongs to the group and passes on when officers change
  • Groups are verified, with two contacts on file
  • Newsletters to your members, by permission
  • Add extras at the regular prices

Part of it stays in town

I set aside $5 of every personal mailbox and $10 of every family or business plan, each year, for a Genesee organization you choose, paid out about every three months.

Your pick

  • Genesee Food Bank
  • Genesee Volunteer Fire Department
  • Genesee Civic Association
  • Genesee Recreation District
  • Genesee Senior Center
  • Genesee Boosters
  • Or name another local group, and I’ll ask them

Why people want one

  • Hometown pride. An address that puts Genesee on every email you send.
  • It isn’t tied to your internet provider. Switch providers without telling everyone a new address.
  • A family address. One place for school notices, club sign-ups and the bills.
  • A business address. More professional than a free webmail account, without running your own domain.
  • An address that outlasts the volunteer. A club or nonprofit address stays with the group when the secretary or treasurer changes, and it’s free.
  • It gives back. Part of what you pay goes to the local group you choose.

Just want to keep your email private on your postings?

You don’t need to buy anything for that. Every posting form here (events, listings, farm stands, jobs and groups) keeps your email private by default: readers fill in a message form, it’s emailed to you, and your address is never shown. Publishing an email or phone number is optional. It’s free.

Good to know

  • This is a small, best-effort service run by one person, not a big provider with round-the-clock support. Read what to expect before you rely on it.
  • Names are first come, first served, and need to be suitable for a community site.
  • Names that could be mistaken for the city, the school or another organization are reserved for them.
  • Business and organization addresses are verified. Before I issue a name like [email protected], I confirm you speak for that business, usually by checking against its directory listing or calling its listed number.
  • Community group addresses belong to the group. When officers change, the group tells me and the address moves to the new volunteers. I check in once a year to make sure it’s still in use, and retire addresses nobody answers for.
  • Newsletters need permission. Mailboxes are for personal and everyday business mail. A verified business or group can ask to send a newsletter; I’ll say yes when the list is made up of people who signed up for it and every issue has a way to unsubscribe. Small lists are free. The daily sending limits otherwise keep everyone’s mail out of spam folders.
  • If a subscription lapses, the mailbox is held for 30 days, and the name isn’t given to anyone else for at least a year.
  • The amount set aside for local groups comes out of the price you pay; it isn’t an extra charge, and it isn’t a tax-deductible donation by you.
  • Addresses are for people and organizations in the Genesee area, and are covered by my terms of use and code of conduct.
  • Having an address is entirely optional. Everything else on geneseeid.us stays free, with or without one.
