Trash, dump and recycling 9

When is the dump (bulky waste site) open?

Genesee’s bulky waste site is on Morscheck Road, across from the sewer lagoons. It’s open the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month, 8 am to 4 pm. A 5th Saturday is not a dump day.

You’ll need to give your property address and a phone number, and the limit is two loads per household per Saturday. It’s for Genesee city residents and rural Latah County residents who pay for weekly trash service; commercial users and people from other counties can’t use it. Extremely large loads go to the transfer station on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays instead.

What can I take on dump day?

It depends on the month. Household waste is accepted only in April and October; the other ten months the site takes demolition-type items.

  • Every month. Up to 4 passenger tires (no rims), 2 large appliances or scrap metal, sheetrock, glass windows, doors (no vinyl), tile, brick, concrete, roofing, carpet and laminate flooring from remodels, wood furniture, untreated lumber and tree stumps. Upholstered furniture, box springs and mattresses are accepted year round.
  • April and October only. Plastic and rubber items, contaminated waste, hot tubs, solidified latex paint and empty paint cans, dishwashers and small appliances, treated lumber and railroad ties, new carpet, insulation, styrofoam, fiberglass, vinyl, tents, tarps, canvas and light bulbs. Demolition items aren’t taken in those two months.
  • Never. Hazardous or asbestos waste, liquids, TVs and computer monitors, and rechargeable batteries.
What does the recycling site next to the dump take? Can I leave regular garbage?

The rural recycling dumpsters take rinsed aluminum and tin or steel cans, paper (newspaper, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, paperback books) and flattened cardboard. They don’t take plastics, glass, foil, paper cartons, hardback books or hazardous waste, and they aren’t for household garbage.

Please don’t leave anything on the ground. The dumpsters are serviced on Fridays. The Moscow Recycling Center takes many more things.

Where can I take yard waste and brush?

The Latah County transfer station on Highway 8 near Moscow takes branches and logs up to 6 feet long and 24 inches across free for Latah County residents. The Moscow Recycling Center has a 24-hour drop-off for smaller yard waste (less than 4 by 6 feet).

It’s open Monday through Saturday, 8 am to 5:30 pm from April through October and 8 am to 4 pm from November through March. Payment is due when you dump, with a minimum fee. Fees and hours can change, so call (208) 882-5724 to confirm.

When is garbage pickup, and is there pickup on holidays?

Weekly collection is by Sunshine Disposal, (208) 743-4075. Call them for your route’s pickup day. For 2026, Memorial Day and Labor Day push all service one day later, and so does Thanksgiving for Thursday service. Other holidays don’t change the schedule.

My can was skipped or only half emptied. Why?

Carts are emptied by a mechanical arm, so: put the cart at the end of the driveway by 6:30 am, with the lid opening facing the road and 3 feet of open space around it, and not blocked by snow banks or parked cars. Bag your trash and close the lid. Extra bags go next to or on top of the cart, and cost $5.60 each. If your cart was missed anyway, call Sunshine Disposal at (208) 743-4075.

Where do I take used oil, paint, batteries and electronics?

Several places, depending on what it is:

  • Used motor or cooking oil. The Moscow Recycling Center’s 24-hour drop-off takes up to 5 gallons. No antifreeze.
  • Electronics, rechargeable batteries, CFL bulbs. Moscow Recycling Center during open hours, Tuesday through Saturday, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. TVs and monitors are not accepted as garbage anywhere.
  • Household hazardous waste. Free for Latah County residents at the transfer station on all Saturdays April through October, and the first Saturday November through March, 8 am to 4 pm. Oil, antifreeze, oven cleaner, pesticides and anything combustible are listed.
  • Paint. Solidified latex paint and empty cans are accepted at the Genesee site in April and October. For liquid paint, call the Solid Waste office at (208) 883-5706.

Internet, phone and utilities 7

What internet providers are in town?

Coverage differs from street to street and farm to farm, so the only reliable test is to enter your own address on each provider’s site, or call them.

  • Ziply Fiber. Fiber to homes and businesses in town, with symmetrical speeds, no contracts and no data caps. Announced in early 2025; check that your address is built. Neighbors’ experiences vary.
  • AirBridge Broadband. A regional provider with a Lewiston office, offering fixed wireless and some fiber. Neighbors recommend it often.
  • First Step Internet. A regional provider that serves the Palouse with fixed wireless and fiber. Ask what they can offer at your address.
  • Starlink. Satellite internet that works almost anywhere with a clear view of the sky. A good choice outside town or where fiber hasn’t reached.
  • T-Mobile Home Internet. 5G service over the cell network. Depends on your signal, so it works well at some houses and poorly at others.
I live outside town. What are my options?

Fiber mostly stops at the edge of town. Out in the country, neighbors most often use Starlink, a fixed wireless provider such as AirBridge or First Step Internet, or T-Mobile Home Internet if their phone gets a good signal at the house.

The FCC map shows which providers report service at your address. Ask your neighbors too; whoever has the same hill and trees between them and the tower knows best.

How do I tell which one is best for me?

Fiber is the fastest and steadiest where you can get it. If you can’t, ask each provider for the speeds, any data limits, contract length and cancellation fees at your address, and whether there is a trial period. Ask a neighbor on the same road how it behaves in the evening and in bad weather.

Neighbors say Verizon and T-Mobile are the most commonly used in town, and that coverage varies a lot once you’re out toward Deary and Elk River. Check each carrier’s coverage map for your address, or borrow a neighbor’s phone to test.

Hunting and the outdoors 2

Where can I hunt near Genesee?

Most of the land around town is private. Idaho Fish and Game’s Access Yes! program pays landowners to open their property to hunters and anglers, and several enrolled properties are near Genesee.

  • Lower Genesee Area. Cropland, CRP and canyon land. Online sign-up required.

Each property has its own dates, rules and sign-in requirements, and some need online sign-up before you go. Read the property’s page first, and always get permission before crossing private land that isn’t enrolled.

Where do I find seasons, licenses and rules?

Idaho Fish and Game sets seasons, tags and licenses. The Clearwater Region office in Lewiston covers Genesee, and the Local links page gathers these and other outdoor resources in one place.
