What to expect

geneseeid.us is a side project. Right now it’s one neighbor building and running it in spare hours, to give something back to Genesee and to help support a family.

That means I can’t work on it full time, and I won’t always answer quickly. Everything here is offered on a best-effort basis: I’ll do my best, and I’d rather tell you plainly what that looks like than promise more than one person can deliver.

How quickly things happen

These are what I aim for, not guarantees. Harvest, holidays and family come first.

Reviewing a new event, listing, post or photo
usually within 3 days
Acting on a “report a problem” or takedown request
usually within 3 days
Reviewing a claim on a business listing
usually within a week
Replying to a contact message
usually within a week
Email service questions and problems
usually within 2 business days

If something on the site exposes private information or puts someone at risk, say so in your report or message and I’ll deal with it as soon as I see it.

The website

  • The site should be up nearly all the time, but there’s no uptime guarantee. It may go down briefly for updates, or for longer if something breaks while I’m away from a computer.
  • Listings, events and other postings come from neighbors and public sources. I review them, but I can’t check every detail or keep every date current. Confirm with the business or organizer before you make the drive, and use “report a problem” when something’s wrong.
  • The site is backed up regularly, but please keep your own copy of anything you’d hate to lose, such as photos you upload.
  • This isn’t the City of Genesee and it isn’t an emergency service. For emergencies call 911; for city business, contact City Hall.

The email service

  • Mail is run with care and backed up, but it’s a small, one-person service without round-the-clock staff. If your livelihood or safety depends on an email arriving within the hour, keep a second address with a large provider for that.
  • Support is by email or the contact form, usually answered within 2 business days. There’s no phone support line.
  • Planned maintenance is done at quiet hours where possible. Unplanned outages get fixed as soon as I can get to them.

Help, and what happens if I can’t keep going

It’s just me for now. I hope to add volunteer moderators from the community, which should make reviews and replies faster, and if the site takes off, a second technical administrator so it doesn’t depend on one person.

If I can’t continue running the site and the email service, my plan is to hand them over, by sale or as a gift, to another administrator I trust, so they keep going. If that truly isn’t possible, for example because of cost, I’ll try to give at least 60 days’ notice before closing, and help people move their listings and mail elsewhere as best I can. I don’t expect it to come to that.

Getting in touch

The contact form or [email protected] reaches me. Thanks for your patience, and for being part of this.

This page describes what to expect day to day. The terms of use are the formal agreement and take priority if the two ever differ.
